Book Review: Where She Went By Gayle Forman

Book Review: Where She Went By Gayle Forman

Where She Went is the sequel to If I Stay, and this time we take heed to Adam’s voice. It’s fairly someday since that deadly accident that killed Mia’s mother and father and her little brother, Denny. Mia entered Juilliard and is a quick rising fashionable cellist. Adam, on the opposite hand, is having the time of his life dwelling the lifetime of a well-known rock star. Or so it appears. Because Adam Wilde is wallowing in despair and despair. What occurred after Mia awoke? Why did Adam and Mia separate? More vital, what occurred to Adam after Mia awoke? Where She Went solutions these questions and picks up the story three years after If I Stay ended.

For all of its 272 pages (my copy is in PDF), Where She Went is heavy, emotionally. I can really feel Adam’s ache proper from the second I began the primary chapter. Just a few pages in direction of the ending, I used to be actually sobbing. If If I Stay is tragic, Where She Went is downright heart-breaking. If I Stay is extra metaphysical, Where She Went is extra life like. These two good books is an ideal pair – after studying the primary you can not wait to proceed with the sequel. Gayle Forman writes with such ardour and uncooked emotion, and I like how she completely shifts from flashback to the current, and vice versa.

Letting go. Closure. These are the central themes in this guide. Who would not get emotional with these form of issues? What I additionally love about this guide (and If I Stay, too) is how music performed a significant half in the lives of the characters. Although I’m not too accustomed to a lot of the songs and singers talked about (I am neither a punk rock chick nor a classical music gal), I’m fascinated with how Adam and Mia are introduced collectively and are torn aside by their ardour for music.

I particularly love this half:

“Concert doesn’t suggest standing up like a goal in entrance of hundreds of strangers. It means coming collectively. It means concord.” (p.243)

Where She Went ends completely, for me that’s, and for a second earlier than I reached the ultimate chapter, I used to be fervently hoping that I can deal with the ending. Which happily I did as a result of Gayle Forman wasn’t that merciless sufficient to completely break my coronary heart into items and make me undergo from rhinitis resulting from extreme crying (exaggerated, I do know, however that was how emotional this guide is). This has been certainly one of my greatest reads for this 12 months, and I strongly advocate this to everybody.

“You know, I considered that so much these final couple of years,” she says in a choked voice. “About who was there for you. Who held your hand whereas you grieved for all that you‘d misplaced?” (p.254).

Oh, tears.

5 stars.
